Traditionally, calypsos have been the most popular style of music played on the steel pan (steel drum) but the instrument is versatile. More and more persons are exploring different ways of using the steel pan and demonstrating that steel pan, like any other instrument can play any genre of music.

The sound of steel pans (steel drums) has changed over the years. As the pan maker's knowledge and technique improved so did the sound of the instrument. However the vintage steel pans from the 1950's and 1960's, still have a small but loyal following.
